Ancestral Homes Series

I received the William Blair Bruce Fine Arts European Travel Scholarship from The Canadian Scandinavian Foundation in 1999. In March of 2000 I used this grant to do research and artwork around the origins of my Nordic and Scottish ancestry. From that trip I created a series drawings and paintings of Viking longships, jewelery, homes and funerary sites which I titled Ancestral Homes. This work was exhibited at the Swedish American Museum Centre in Chicago in 2002 and at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle and Jens Thielsen Gallery in London in 2003. http://macleod9.com/macleod_art/ancestral_homes/art_ancestral.php

Lachine Canal : Past and Present Series

The Lachine Canal : Past and Present project was funded by Peter McAuslan from McAuslan Brewery and this series of photographic storyboards, paintings and drawings illustrate the history of the Lachine Canal through its industries, buildings, waterways, locks and communities. This work was exhibited at Stewart Hall in 2004 and the Maison de la Culture Marie – Uguay in 2005. http://macleod9.com/macleod_art/lachine_canal/art_canal.php

Central Park and New York III Visions Series

New York – III Visions, http://macleod9.com/maxwell_gallery.html are a series of drawings and painting by G. Scott MacLeod, the work was inspired by Jefferson Hayman’s photos of New York City. Previously in 2004 MacLeod exhibited a series of drawings and paintings based on Monica T. Gotz’s pinhole photographs of Central Park. Collectively MacLeod and Gotz exhibited Central Park: Two Views, http://macleod9.com/macleod_art/central_park/art_central_park.php at the Arsenal Gallery Central Park, New York.

Scottish Memories Series

My Scottish Memory Series was inspired by my Grandfather and Grandmother’s trip to Scotland in 1971. The encaustic and oil landscapes were based on my Grandfather’s travel diaries and photographs from his travels in Aberdeen, Inverness, Stornoway and Skye. The St Andrew’s Society of Montreal sponsored an exhibition of this work at the Maxwell Haus studio in 2007.

Avalon Peninsula Series

I created this series landscapes during my residency at the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland during the month of April 2005. This work was exhibited at the Maxwell Haus Studio in 2005 and the Jens Thielsen Gallery in 2006. http://www.larazagroup.com/pouchcove_scott_ap.html

Meeting with the Goddesses Series

Meeting with the Goddesses is a chapter title I have taken from Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces, as this body of work deals with several themes centred around the sacred feminine, mythology, the archetypal mind, temples and funerary objects. The works are a series of mixed media figurative goddesses, sacred megalithic sites, jewelery and funerary objects. This work was exhibited at the Praxis Hagan Galerie in Berlin in 2007.

“I have made it my life’s work to explore history, mythology and story telling in my art making process whether it be painting, photography, music or film in the hope to better understand where we have come from, who we are and where we are going. Joseph Campbell believed it is our myths that define us and I have defined myself in my work and created my own ‘myth’ or life path through my work. Art has made me humble, it has fed and sheltered me, given me a voice, and enabled me to do the same for others, through mentoring and outreach work. And as a result of this work I have better understood humanity’s place on this planet and have tried to be a positive influence for political and social change.”
