THE SACRED FEMININE AND MASCULINE

Panels

In this installation I have created 14 large (183 X 61 cm) mixed media photo-transfers on canvas to be mounted on stretchers. Half of the photographs would be of the seven stages of womanhood representing the cycle of life and death: birth, innocence, teen, maiden, motherhood, grandmother, and elder.

In these life size figurative photographs I will incorporate a series of symbols relating to each stage of womanhood and manhood in Photoshop. The second half of the project is to create photos equally for the seven stages of manhood.

This work is to be hung in a long narrow gallery space, with a masculine on one wall and feminine on the opposing wall. Both feminine and masculine groups will face each other, juxtaposing the yin and the yang, Venus and Mars and illustrating the duality of our species and the cycle of life.

Digital Projections

1. Wall sections above seven figures: Here are projections of long boats above the figures to suggest a ship. This vessel represents the journey and carrier of life with the various stages of the boats birth, life and death projected in sequence.

2. Front white wall: On this surface I have illustrated the life cycle of an oak tree; seedlings (birth), the sprout from the seed (innocence) a young seven inch tree (teen) the sapling (maiden and young man) a maturing oak producing seeds (motherhood and fatherhood), the mature oak (grandmother and grandfather) an old oak that has reached the end of its journey and is ready to go back to the earth from where it came as organic matter (elder).

3. The Floor: Has moving water behind mandalas, labyrinths, Celtic and Viking shields. The background water element represents the carrier of life and supporter of the vessel, it links both feminine and masculine and becomes the giver of life.

4. The Ceiling: Has a projection of the night sky with Northern Hemisphere constellations. This represents the heavenly map used to guide travelers and sailors to their destinations.

Further possibilities

Performance

1. I would like to collaborate with a male and female storytellers, with the aim to explore these different stations in the life cycle. Through storytelling each station could be personified through mythological imagery.

2.I will also interview each individual subjects after they have experienced the installation. Each subject experience will be recorded as a living record of their station in the life cycle. The individual would be asked a series of questions around physical, emotional, ceremonial & spiritual growth. Also how they are perceived by society in their current stage of life. These recorded stories will be on loops and activated by motion sensors or buttons near the photographs.  The Birth station will depicted through sounds as opposed to language.

Music

I would also like to incorporate environmental sound-scapes from nature that ‘underscore’ the voices and music.  These will reflect the environment that will be created in the space. Also Hip Hop artist Goodvibes will be available for live performances.
