This installation and performance is designed to use the voices of characters that experienced and witnessed the Irish holocaust during the Black '47 the worst year of the Irish Famine. 100,000 immigrants left Ireland on the 'Coffin Ships' fleeing the Political Famine in Ireland during the 1800's. During these famine years Irelands population changed from 8 Million to 4 Million, with 2 Million immigrating and 2 Million dying. Many of these immigrants came to Canada through Grosse Ile quarantine station suffering from cholera, typhus and severe poverty. It is estimated that between 5000 and 10, 000 Irish are buried in mass graves on Grosee
Ile. In this piece through passenger testimonials we tell the story of their passage from Ireland to Canada. |
